The ATSF and BNSF SD40-2s differ from the previous BN and CN releases with the placement of the airhorn and with the air conditioner/fan setup. Modifications such as these were done by the railroads after the factory had finished them, making these models unique. |

The SD40-2 "mid production" is differentiated from its bretheren by, among other things, its deck mounted ditch lights (again, railroad modified), and anti-climbers (standardized in the mid phase), seen here. |

Another example of the unique differences between the various releases: The BN and CN models feature cab mounted headlights, while the BNSF and ATSF models feature low mounted lights. Note again the differences in airhorn placement between the two variants. |
